remembering Con Carr Kildare

Remembering the late ‘Great Con Carr’ on what would have been his 100th birthday today. Con was a great family man, some character, a man that was always in good form and loved his story telling.
He is well known for his ‘Sporting and Personal Achievements’.
Con was a magnificent cyclist and held many records, cycling in many different races such as the Rás Tailteann series and the list goes on and on.
He was picked to represent Ireland in the 1956 Melbourne Olympics Games’ but sadly due too sufficient funds not been raised back in hard times, along with other circumstances, one of ‘Ireland’s Greatest Ever Cyclists’ missed out on this golden opportunity.
Con later went on to hold many cycling records which he cherished so much, Limerick-Dublin (120miles 5hrs 11mins) 1956, Galway-Dublin (133miles 5hrs 38mins) 1956 and Cork-Dublin (166miles 6hrs 55mins) 1955. Con held the Cork-Dublin record for 49years up until 2004.
Con in our eyes still really holds this magnificent record of Cork-Dublin as road conditions and bike standards in 49 years changed dramatically and cannot be compared.
Con worked on the bog with Bord Na Mona all his life, working in Clonsast, Derryounce and Derrylea. He also worked in Littleton in Tipperary which he cycled down each week and then cycled back home again for the weekends.
Con had a massive involvement in many voluntary community organisations such as the local CYMS hall, the local bingo and the community games.
Con was involved in the ‘Community Games’ at local, county and national executive levels from the 1970's until 2005.
Con was also the local correspondent for the Monasterevin surrounding area in the weekly published, Leinster Leader and Kildare Nationalist newspapers which every story having its own little twist.
Con was honoured with the ‘Kildare Lifetime Achievement Award’ in 2005 for all his sporting and personal achievements for all his hard work and generosity he gave too many voluntary organisations.
Con was a man who gave so much and expected nothing in return. Con’s great memories will never be forgotten.
